Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vladimir Putin on his landslide victory in the Russian presidential election. In an X-Message on Monday, Modi wrote, “Congratulations to Vladimir Putin on his re-election as President of Russia. I look forward to working with him to further advance the India-Russia alliance and strategic partnership in the years to come.”

Putin is about to sit in power for the sixth time after receiving more than 87 per cent of the votes in the Russian presidential election. His nearest rival, Russian Communist Party candidate Nikolai Kharitonov, received just over 4 per cent of the vote. A group of political analysts predicted before the vote that Putin would be “unstoppable” in Russian politics, which has been virtually unopposed for the past two-and-a-half decades. In the result, it is matched. The Kremlin had indicated that Putin’s vote was certain to increase compared to the previous four presidential elections. It has been agreed. Earlier in the 2018 presidential election, Putin received 77.5 per cent of the vote. Although the election was uncontested, Putin supporters were accused of forcing ballot boxes to be filled with fake votes, fraud and voter obstruction. This time too many complaints have been raised.
